Possible civil war ID tag- Found in MI!

My Whites picked up this interesting piece, a round piece stamped metal that reads
    DARWIN DRAKE
    MICH 10TH
    COMPANY
    E
    On the back (2nd photo)
    PORT HURON

Found it 15 miles north of Port Huron. There is a "22" stamped over the 10, if it was stamped the other way around it would read 22ND, in my mind. It measures 1.5 inches in diameter and 1/16th inch thick.
Just Googling this info brings hits of the Michigan 10th regiment of the Civil War, around 1861-'65. Company E was comprised of mostly men from the Port Huron, St. Clair area. The fact that it has been altered (22 over the 10) offers the theory that it is authentic (why change information if it was a bogus soldier in the first place?)
Internet and library research only connects me to 1 Darwin Drake through federal and state census reports. Born 1835 in New York state, moved around some but settled into Wales township, MI. There are some paragraphs on him through St. Clair history websites that speak of his career of teaching, religion, and serving the community but no mention of military service. He is not listed as a service man to the 10th or 22nd regiment and complete searches for Darwin Drake on military service lists do not have anyone by that name.
Civil war and geneolgy buffs, can this be a real ID tag for a civil war soldier? Should I be looking somewhere else or search differently for the man that owned this tag? Thanks for your time!
