56 silver dime made into a ring

Yesterday Kim and I hit a small park near the ocean, it was loaded with targets, Kim found a nice 26 Merc along with a cool old toy jeep, I was able to pull in a silver ring made out of a 56 Rosie, we hunted this site for 2 hours and pulled in 90 quarters between the two of us. The day before we hit an old school site that was torn down in the early 1900's, I found what I believe is a cuff link with an eagle and stars on it, I tested the gold color plating and it tested positive for at least 18K, I'm not sure exactly what it is, the token was found two days ago at a soccer field.

When you said your dime ring was 1976, I was doubtful. It looked like all silver to me. Had it been a '76, you would have seen some of the base metal. It sure cleaned up nice. Very cool!!! How the heck do you suppose they made that ring? Its outer surface is concave and still maintains the lettering. The edges still have the ridges. How can that be done? The cuff link is also very cool. It looks military. Good finds, buddy.

That ring out of a coin is pretty neat. Makes me wonder how they did that so nice.
To me... It's not all about the value of the targets. It's the history behind it.

Dale. I saw that post, and I acutally made a ring out of a quarter when I was kid. I believe I used the same method as the post. My dad showed me how. He learned while sitting on a ship during WWII with nothing better to do. The method is very simple, and only requires a silver coin, a hammer, and an anvil (small will do). You just keep turning the quarter on edge and gently tapping with the hammer. You keep comparing the ridge that you are developing to your finger until it looks like the right size. Then you drill out the center and finish the fine work inside the ring with jeweler's files. Once you have the band, you can whittle it down to include a heart, or any number of motifs. BUUUUTTT, I have never seen anything done like Steve has found, and I just can't imagine how it's done, unless the ring was made using some kind of specialized machine. His ring is concave with the lettering still in tack. It's obvious that the maker chose which lettering he wanted left in tack, because he chose "In God We Trust" and the date. I'll bet the date is the date the wearer was born. One edge of the concave rim has the original outer coin ribbing completely in tack! Inside the coin it says "ONE DIME"! I'm mystified. But I want one of those machines. Or I want the alien technology that made that ring.....pesky aliens....

Since the silver is malleable enough to flatten with a hammer or spoon, instead of peening the edge flat, why couldnt you just drill the hole through the coin, size it on a ring sizer by enlargening the hole with a half-round file, then leave the ring on the ring sizer and tap the edges lightly with a small mallet until the edges fold over and lay flat against the sizer? That way the lettering would be left intact and not obliterated by peening the edge flat all the way around the coin.

Neat finds Steve, I have to agree with Kim as all the coin rings I have saw, don't even come close to looking like yours. The maker must use some type of press to mold it.
